    Joanna Owen, violin

Dr. Joanna Owen’s career has been as a performing musician, educator and creator. Her significant orchestra experience includes the Rochester Philharmonic, Syracuse Symphony, and multiple seasons with the National Symphony Orchestra. While with the NSO, she performed on many of the most prestigious American and international stages, and on several tours that took her to four continents, including such locales as Uruguay, Macao, and Oman. Dr. Owen is an Associate Concertmaster of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and recently acted as Concertmaster on a session with Grammy Award winning guitar virtuoso Sharon Isbin for a world premiere recording of “Affinity,” by Chris Brubeck. As a chamber musician and an orchestral player her work has been featured on cable television, PBS and NPR.

A passionate educator, Dr. Owen is Professor of violin and chamber music at George Mason University, and previously served on the faculty at the Washington International School and the University of Rochester. While completing her Doctoral studies, she was a teaching assistant to Charles Castleman and Oleh Krysa. Her major teachers also include Camilla Wicks at the San Francisco Conservatory, Zvi Zeitlin at the Eastman School of Music, Boris Belkin at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, and Boris Kushnir through cooperation with the Austro-American Institute in Vienna. Dedicated to mentor the next generation of students, Dr. Owen engaged in lessons and workshops for the National Symphony Summer Institute and the George Mason Summer Academy. She is a frequent adjudicator for the Northern Virginia Music Teacher Association and other DC area competitions. Dr. Owen is a clinician for Virginia and Maryland youth orchestras specializing in excerpt preparation, and her students have performed on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and at Carnegie Hall.

Driven to engage, inspire and educate, Dr. Owen was compelled by the lack of music education in preschool and elementary schools in her native Poland to co-found “Concertino,” an agency that presents outreach concerts to young children throughout the Warsaw metropolitan region. Combining classical repertoire with folk music and popular styles, the agency has created a welcoming atmosphere to students with disparate levels of musical knowledge, presenting over 500 concerts annually and reaching thousands of young listeners.
