    Ryan Baird, double bass

    Ryan Emerson Baird, DMA is a Los Angeles-based double bass performer and educator. Ryan began his collegiate double bass studies under Sandor Ostlund, DMA at Baylor University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2011. Ryan continued his studies under David Allen Moore at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, earning a Master of Music and a Graduate Certificate before earning his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Double Bass Performance with additional emphases in Musicology, Viola da Gamba Performance, and Arts Leadership.

    Along with regular performances with various musical ensembles throughout Southern California, Ryan performs as a member of the Santa Barbara Symphony and Delirium Musicum Chamber Ensemble, where he is a co-founder. Additionally, he has played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Phoenix Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Santa Barbara Opera, the USC Baroque Sinfonia, and Thornton Edge contemporary music ensemble.

    Dr. Baird maintains a diverse teaching practice. He is on faculty at the Colburn CSPA where he teaches private lessons and co-leads the Double Bass Ensemble. Ryan is also a teaching artist with the LA Philharmonic's YOLA program, where he leads sectionals, teaches private lessons, and supports YOLA ensembles of all levels. During the summer months, Ryan has performed at the Texas Music Festival, Domaine Forget in Québec, Kent/Blossom Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute, Vermont Mozart Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival. In previous years, Dr. Baird has also taught double bass during the summer at the Idyllwild Arts Summer program and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles summer camp.

    During his free time, Ryan loves to go trail running in the mountains surrounding Los Angeles and has completed numerous ultramarathons
