    Tomoko Uchino, piano


    A native of Japan, Tomoko Uchino is an accomplished solo and collaborative pianist and dedicated educator whose career spans major conservatories, music festivals, and community institutions across the United States and abroad. She has performed extensively in partnership with distinguished instrumentalists and vocalists, appearing in recitals, masterclasses and festivals at the Juilliard School, Hoff-Barthelson Music School, Meadowmount School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, the Heifetz International Music Institute, and the Great Mountains Music Festival in PyeongChang, where she served as the official pianist for the inaugural Parisot Cello Competition. Her work as a collaborative artist has taken her to concert halls throughout the country, and she has served as an official pianist for regional auditions with organizations such as the Metropolitan Opera National Council.

    Dr. Uchino's principal piano teachers have included Ann Schein, Arthur Greene, Martin Canin, Boaz Sharon, Margo Garrett, Rex Woods and Susan Starr. In addition, she has honed her artistry through masterclasses with John Perry, Eugene Istomin, Ruth Laredo, Paul Badura-Skoda, Gilbert Kalish, Danielle Martin, and Margarita Fyodorova, experiences that shaped her interpretive insight and collaborative approach. She has also worked closely with celebrated instrumental and vocal coaches such as Jonathan Feldman, Rita Sloan, Brian Zeger, Paula Fan, Seth Knopp, Anne Epperson, Joseph Silverstein, and Violaine Melançon.

    In addition to her performing career, Dr. Uchino has been an active piano educator for more than two decades, teaching students from early childhood through adulthood. She maintains a thriving studio at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, where she teaches private lessons, Suzuki groups, and chamber music, and she has previously held teaching positions at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, the Suzuki Music School of Westport, Summit Music Studio, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and the University of Arizona. Her students regularly participate in recitals, workshops, and festivals, and many have received top prizes, awards and recognition in competitions. She is particularly valued for her emphasis on musical literacy, expressive playing, and the development of confident, well-rounded musicians.

    Dr. Uchino is deeply committed to advancing the music community through leadership and service. She currently serves as President of the New York State Music Teachers Association and has held a role on the board of Friends of Music Concerts in Sleepy Hollow, NY. In these positions, she contributes to strategic initiatives, community engagement, and the strengthening of music education at both regional and state levels.

    She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance with a minor in Music Theory from the University of Arizona, a Graduate Diploma in Collaborative Piano from the Juilliard School, a Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music with High Honors from the University of Michigan. Dr. Uchino is an active member of MTNA, NYSMTA, Piano Teachers Guild in Manhattan, NY and the Westchester Musicians Guild, and continues to dedicate her career to both artistic excellence and the education of the next generation of musicians.
