Lucy Tan, Pianist
Pianist Lucy Tan, as a young prodigy, was featured at notable venues such as Jordan Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. She made her live WGBH radio debut at age 11 on “Morning Pro Musica” with Robert Lurtzema, followed by her concerto debut at age 12 with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Tan appeared on NPR, Boston WBGH, High Plains Public Radio, and Kansas Public Radio. She can also be heard on the recording, Kuş Dili: The Language of Birds, a CD that integrates global and classical music, recorded with faculty from the New England Conservatory and Boston-based artists. Her performances have taken her across the United States and internationally. She is a laureate of national and international piano competitions and performed in music festivals such as Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and Bowdoin International Music Festival.
A passionate chamber musician, she performed sonata duo repertoire with violinist Dr. Yunjung Lee in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Iowa, and Indiana. She currently also collaborates in the Eder-Tan Duo with Dr. Zsolt Eder, concertmaster of the Topeka Symphony. Dr. Tan was previously featured in Chamber Music Amarillo’s concert series, was a two-time recipient of the Masonic Cultural Enrichment Grant, was showcased at Grace Episcopal Cathedral’s concert series, and was featured on WPTA USA-Missouri’s concert series on the piano sonatas of Mozart. Other activities include performing Liszt’s Tötentanz and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Washburn Symphony Orchestra, performing on the Ruel Joyce Concert Series in Kansas City, concertizing on the Musical Arts Series at the University of South Alabama, performing at the Carolyn Klassen Memorial Piano Festival, and playing on the Sandzén Gallery Chamber Concert Series.
Dr. Tan received her B.M. and M.M. degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Colorado Boulder. Some of her former teachers include David Korevaar, Bruce Brubaker, Veronica Jochum, Bob Spillman, Tatyana Dudochkin, and Hui-Yen Chang. As a presenter, she was invited to the MTNA National Conference, NCKP: The Piano Conference, and many state and local conferences. Her research on music and cognitive science has been published in the MTNA e-Journal. She is the winner of several grants, most recently the Mary B. Sweet Summer Sabbatical Award for musical research and travel in Boston, Paris, Salzburg, and Vienna. Dr. Tan is a sought-after masterclass clinician, and adjudicates at regional, national, and international piano competitions.
Dr. Tan is currently the Director of Keyboard Studies at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas where she teaches piano. She is also the founder of the pre-college camp Washburn Summer Keyboard Academy and Topeka’s PianoFest. Her past students won high marks in piano festivals and competitions and were accepted into acclaimed universities and graduate programs.
