    Libby Meyer, composer

Libby Meyer is a composer whose work reflects the natural rhythms and patterns of the world around her. Her music for film, theater, orchestra, chamber ensembles, and wind band has been commissioned and performed internationally by a wide range of ensembles and organizations. She has served as composer-in-residence at Isle Royale National Park, the Bunnell Arts Center in Homer, Alaska, and the Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden, and has participated in Composing in the Wilderness in Denali National Park.

Meyer was selected to attend the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in Memory of Buddy Baker at the NYU Steinhardt School, supported by a Sorel Women in Film Music scholarship. In 2016, she and her colleagues received a National Endowment for the Arts Imagine Your Parks grant celebrating the centennial of the National Park Service. As part of this project, the team is recording soundscapes in the Lake Superior national parks, and Meyer is composing a new work for a touring sound installation premiering in December 2017. She is also co-founder of the Keweenaw Soundscape Project, which documents the region's acoustic environment for ecological, social, and artistic purposes.

Meyer has received grants, awards, and commissions from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Wyatt Fund, the Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Sorel Foundation, the American Composers Forum, American Women Composers, the Michigan Music Teachers Association, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, the Michigan Tech Research Excellence Fund, the Falling Tree Collaborative, the American Wild Ensemble, the Superior Wind Symphony, and the Tech Theatre Company.

She is a Teaching Professor at Michigan Technological University, where she directs the music composition program and serves as the founder and Artistic Director of the Surround Sound Music Festival. She is the Michigan Delegate to the International Society for Contemporary Music and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Northwestern University. Her music is published by Alias Press and distributed worldwide by Theodore Presser. More information can be found on her website.

When not composing, Libby enjoys running marathons, kayaking on Lake Superior, and tending her honeybees.
