Ana Maria Locke, clarinet
Ana Maria Locke is a clarinetist and educator who serves on the faculty at Clarke University, Wartburg College, the University of Dubuque, and Kirkwood Community College. As a performer, Locke is active in orchestral, chamber, and collaborative settings. She serves as second clarinetist with the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra and has appeared with professional ensembles throughout the Midwest, including premieres of new works.
An experienced educator, Locke works with clarinetists at all stages of development, from beginning and returning adult students to advanced performers preparing for juries, recitals, auditions, and professional careers. She has taught extensively in collegiate studios, summer music camps, and community-based music education settings.
Her teaching emphasizes the development of a beautiful, reliable sound, efficient and healthy technique, and an intentional approach to practice. Locke is the coauthor of the Centrally Rooted Musicians and Instructor Notebooks (first and second editions), which integrate principles of music education, mindfulness, and brain health.
Locke is currently completing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance at the University of Iowa. She holds a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a Bachelor of Music Education from Troy University.
