Alice Chenyang Xu, piano
Alice Chenyang Xu has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany, the US, Canada, and throughout China. Notable concerts include performances at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago Auditorium Theatre, Corbett Auditorium in Cincinnati, Hochschule Musik Hall in Leipzig, Germany, and Jordan Hall in Boston. Xu has collaborated with artists, including violinist Anthony Marwood, cellists John Myerscough and Bonnie Hampton, soprano Lucy Shelton, baritone William Sharp, pianist Christina Dahl, Borromeo String Quartet and members of the Cleveland Quartet. She has coached with composer George Crumb on his set of piano work Makrokosmos and has played for former Secretary of State Colin Powell under the auspices of the Eisenhower Fellowships at the Northeast Asia Regional Program Seminar.
Her upcoming concert engagements include various collaborations with instrumentalists, pianists and singers. Xu will be performing in Boston Symphony Orchestra’s prelude concert featuring composer Helen Grime’s song cycles, Sonata Night concert series and Liederabend concert series at New England Conservatory. Her piano duo Xuberg with Miles Fellenberg will be giving a recital at Dorflinger Museum in New York amongst other venues and her piano trio Trio Sol will give its debut recital in Jordan Hall in Boston.
As an active educator, Xu has been teaching since 2006 and has taught at various music schools in Chicago and Boston. Her students’s awards include ABRSM exam merit award from Grade 1-8, Honorable mention at the 2012 Music Institute of Chicago Student Competition and 2009 Southwest Regional Piano Competition 3rd Prize in China. Xu also conducts an annual private piano workshop at Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China and has appeared in various summer music festival around the world including Yellowbarn, Internationale Mendelssohn-Akademie, Art of Piano, and Morningside Music Bridge. Xu currently is the coordinator for Piano for Non-Majors Class at New England Conservatory and teaches at the Tufts University Community Music Program. Most recently, Xu has served on the jury for Tufts University Youth Philharmonic Orchestra Competition and was invited to give a lecture recital at The Consulate General of the United States, Chengdu in December 2019.
Xu was a recipient of the Dorothy Hinton-Congleton Memorial Presidential Scholarship, second prize-winner of the 10th Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, third prize-winner of the 2nd SEILER International Piano Competition in Germany, and the recipient of a Yamaha Scholarship. She is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at New England Conservatory of Music. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and Roosevelt University and a Master’s degree from New England Conservatory. Her principal teachers include Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, Wha-Kyung Byun, Russell Sherman, Meng-Chieh Liu, Winston Choi and Seymour Lipkin.
